Milieutopia is Derek Rector's blog about the transformation of directories, knowledge bases, and communities - three big things that non-profits must get right to retain members.

A milieu, as defined by the Mirriam-Webster dictionary, is the physical or social setting in which something occurs or develops. Our product, Milieu, combines the capabilities of directories, knowledge bases, and communities to create a natural context for engagement. The same can be achieved using other platforms if the right strategies and a few modifications are applied. By sharing stories about solutions we've implemented for our clients, and the ideas behind Milieu, Derek hopes to provide a playbook for anyone that wishes to achieve real transformation for their constituents.

I've heard a lot of people say that 5 years is a lifetime in tech, that if it takes more than a couple of years to get the details right, you've missed your market. Milieu is the product of a digital journey that began in the late 80's. Over the years I've realized that technology can't replace the knowledge and wisdom of people with deep experience. We can extend and amplify knowledge within an organization to increase innovation, build resiliency, or improve competitiveness, but we can't replace years of experience with knowledge repositories, search tools, or models.
